Accounts, hosting, storage for every cover and picture on the site, and the database behind every story — none of it is free to run. This page is how that gets paid for.
Ads, and how they work here
A small number of ad slots are placed around the site — one here, one on the browse page, one under each chapter you finish reading. Every one of them is labelled "Advertisement" so it is never mistaken for the site's own writing, none of them is a pop-up, an interstitial, or anything that blocks what you came to read, and none of them tracks you beyond what the ad itself does. If you use an ad blocker, the site works exactly the same without them — a blocked slot just quietly disappears rather than leaving a gap or nagging you to turn it back on. Every slot can also be closed on the spot with the ✕ in its corner.
Ads are optional — for the site, not just for you
Nothing about Sho/Ring depends on ads being on. They are a single switch in the site's own configuration, off by default — every page on the site works identically, with or without them, and turning them off removes every trace of them: no reserved space, no script loads, no request ever leaves your browser for an ad network.
